TRAILS Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Nature Reserve is approximately 1 000 ha in extent. The reserve's terrain incorporates mountain gorges, the estuary of the Palmiet River and a stretch of sandy and rocky shoreline. Both coastal and montane fynbos (heath) are represented here. Because of the diversity of plant species found here, Kleinmond is renowned as an incredibly rich floral reserve. A particular species of heath vegetation, Erica pillansii, is to be found here and nowhere else in the world. Cape grysbok and common duiker may be spotted in the reserve, and southern right whales occur offshore between June and December. Although strictly speaking not within there reserve, the coastal marshes near Kleinmond's are the habitat of one of the world's rarest amphibians, namely the micro from (Mictrobatrachella capensis). Location: South-western part of the province, south-east of Gordon's Bay. Access: From Gordon's Bay take the R44 to Betty's Bay and continue to Kleinmond. The reserve lies to the west and north of this town. Accommodation: The well-situated Palmiet caravan park and camping area adjoins the Kleinmond reserve in the west. The Frank Robb hut, near the eastern boundary of the reserve and I the Kleinmond Caravan Park, sleeps 10 people and is available to hikers making use of the surrounding trails. Other facilities: Short walking trails; picnic sites with fireplaces at Fairy Glen. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 24 hours.
